Marma are the 107 vital energy points in Ayurvedic medicine where the body holds everything it has never had time to release. Kalari massage finds them. The ocean finishes the work.
The Premise
Your body is not a machine that has been running poorly. It is an intelligent system that has been absorbing stress, tension, and suppressed energy for years without anywhere to put it.
Marma is seven days on the cliffs of Varkala with one focused purpose: to give your body somewhere to put it.
Every morning you enter the Arabian Sea for a surf lesson. Every afternoon a Kalari practitioner from Abhijit Gurukul and the Ojaswi Wellness Center works through your marma points with medicated oil. Every meal is Ayurvedic, chosen to support what the treatments are doing inside you. Between the sea, the massage, and the food, the body does what it has been trying to do all along.
The Place
Varkala is a clifftop town on the Kerala coast, 51 kilometres north of Trivandrum. The Arabian Sea breaks against red laterite cliffs below a stretch of temples, small restaurants, and one of the few beaches in India where the ocean faces west. The sunsets are extraordinary and entirely unearned.
January is peak season in Kerala. Dry, warm, and clear. The sea is calm enough to learn to surf and alive enough to feel like something.
The Treatments
Kalari Massage at Ojaswi Wellness Center
Kalaripayattu is one of the world's oldest martial arts, originating in Kerala. Its associated bodywork is among the most advanced therapeutic massage traditions on earth. Kalari massage works directly on the marma points using warm medicated oils specific to each person's constitution. The effect is not relaxation in the spa sense. It is closer to a deep reset of the nervous system.
Sessions are led by Abhijit Gurukul and team at Ojaswi Wellness Center. Each participant receives a daily treatment across the full seven days. The cumulative effect of seven consecutive sessions is substantially greater than the sum of its parts.
The Ayurvedic Diet
Every meal across the seven days is prepared according to Ayurvedic principles: seasonal, local, warm, and specific to the healing work the treatments are doing. Processed food, refined sugar, and alcohol are absent. What replaces them is food that is genuinely interesting and often surprising. Kerala's culinary tradition is one of the most sophisticated in India and the Ayurvedic table is its most intentional expression.
Surf Lessons
Each morning before the heat of the day, participants enter the sea for a structured surf lesson. Surfing is not incidental to the program. Reading and responding to the ocean requires a quality of presence that is difficult to fake and impossible to sustain while thinking about something else. For most participants it is the first time in years that their mind has had no option but to be exactly where their body is.

The Program Arc
Day 1 (January 2): Arrival
Participants arrive in Varkala and check into their accommodation. A welcome dinner brings the group together for the first time. An introduction to the principles of Ayurveda and the Kalari tradition grounds the week ahead. Early night.
Day 2 (January 3): The Body Wakes Up
First surf lesson. First Kalari massage. The body registers both as new information. Energy levels may fluctuate as the treatments begin their work. This is normal and expected.
Day 3 (January 4): The Marma Diagnosis
The Ojaswi team conducts an individual Ayurvedic assessment for each participant, identifying the specific marma points and constitutional patterns most relevant to their treatment. From this point forward each session is tailored rather than general.
Day 4 (January 5): Deepening
Mid-retreat. The surf lesson begins to feel more natural. The massage begins to move deeper. Many participants notice significant shifts in sleep quality around this day.
Day 5 (January 6): The Kerala Day
A morning visit to the Janardhana Swami Temple at Varkala and a walk through the local market. An afternoon cooking session with the Ayurvedic kitchen team. Understanding the food deepens the practice of eating it.
Day 6 (January 7): Peak
The most physically demanding surf session of the week. The deepest massage treatment. An optional evening breathwork session with the group. The kind of day that people come back to in memory for a long time.
Day 7 (January 8): Integration
A gentle final surf session. The last Kalari treatment, focused on consolidation rather than release. A closing circle in the evening before the farewell dinner. Participants build their personal post-retreat protocol to take home.
Day 8 (January 9): Departure
Morning departures. Flights from Trivandrum International Airport, 51 kilometres south.
